Rick Merriam can trace his lineage in the natural-food industry back to 1931, when his father and grandfather started one of the first natural-food grocery stores in San Francisco. Out of that thriving business, GCI Nutrients was formed in 1970 initially as a trucking company to ship ingredients throughout California, and to Texas, Tennessee, and New York.
Through his gift for building strong relationships, Rick expanded the ingredient-distribution business and eventually opened GCI offices in Canada, Brazil, India, China, and Europe, many of which he maintains to this day.
Those relationships have been key to GCI’s ability to source the very best ingredients of the highest purity, quality, and bioavailability.

Jethren has been recognized as a visionary and thought leader in the organic and natural foods industry from its very beginning, even helping to create the very standards and definitions of the industry along with such other early pioneers such as Whole Foods, Mrs. Gooch’s, and Dr. Jeffrey Bland.
In those early years, Jethren founded and managed an organic/natural restaurant, bakery, retail store and wholesale distributor. He was CEO and Partner of Redwood Natural Foods relocating the business from Eureka to Santa Rosa, California. His passion for developing healthy consumer packaged goods (CPG) led to several innovative in-house products, including Rush Natural Sodas, dairy products, organic crackers, and organic juices. Redwood introduced the first vacuum-packed organic tofu in the U.S.
Following his passion for product development, he then founded Spectrum Marketing. His company provided private-label products for Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and other early industry companies such as Tree of Life, Lifestream, and Westbrae, which in turn led to Nature’s Path and to Hain-Celestial.
Jethren continued his thought-leadership as Founder/Chairman/CEO of Spectrum Organic Products, which for two decades was the leading “healthy/good fat” company in North America with a wide range of all-organic/non-GMO first-to-market innovative concepts and products. These included plant-based cooking and essential-fatty-acid oils, condiments, spreads, multiple food categories, nutraceuticals, and supplements. Spectrum extracted and bottled all their own EFA oils, developing the cutting-edge SpectraVac™ technology that utilized no oxygen, no light, and low heat. Spectrum was also the master natural products industry distributor for Calistoga Water and Juices. The company went public in 1999 through a reverse merger and was acquired outright by Hain-Celestial in 2006.
Always the entrepreneur, after the sale of Spectrum, Jethren became a partner in a full-line Ayurvedic personal-care company. Then later, as owner/partner, he merged China Liaison, American Health and Nutrition, and New Organic Ventures into New Organics, Inc., which became a leading organic-industrial-ingredients company selling food, animal feed, and CPG private-label products to Walmart, Aldi, Fresh Thyme and others.

And the U.S. Air Force recently approved it for worldwide use in all bases. The U.S. Air Force Academy is currently evaluating it for their cadets. And the U.S. Army is evaluating it as well. Soon we will begin distributing it to all 20 Shriners Children's Hospitals in the U.S. as well as their hosptial in Mexico and one in Canada. And we are currently looking at how best to introduce it to the retail consumer.

A: BeneSweet(R) is also currently sold "business-to-business" as a custom nutritional sweetening system for food and beverage manufacturers. Currently, BeneSweet(R) is used by Healthy Dairy(R) to power our Yogurt Smoothies, and by CannaSafety, which makes a hemp/CBD "shot" called Lucid, which is available at Amazon.
